BIOLOGY OF CELL AND ORGANISM
BIO1CO
2020
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject, students are introduced to biology by discussing units of ever increasing size and complexity. We begin with molecules and cells, then proceed to tissues and organs in plants and animals, and how these units cooperate in the whole organism. Topics covered in lectures include cell and molecular biology, structure and function of animal and plants, Mendelian genetics as well as biological principles. Relevant questions and lecture material will be presented in advance on the LMS site for students to work through, and face-to-face lectures will be used for summarising and to explain the more difficult concepts. The practical component focuses on biological observation, recording skills and data interpretation, and introduces a number of biological disciplines (e.g. microscopy, microbiology, biochemistry and physiology). BIO1CO is a cornerstone subject, so there is some emphasis on the graduate capabilities (GC), especially writing.
