Subject outline

This foundation subject introduces students to contemporary social work as a practice which aims to promote social change and development, social cohesion and the empowerment and liberation of people. The profession's historical development within contested approaches to social welfare is examined as is the influence of this history on social work values and roles. Students examine the notion that social work can be distinguished from other human service work through adherence to subjective and objective knowledge. Practice theories and intervention approaches for individual, community and societal work are introduced to demonstrate the need for reflective social workers who can work with diverse people, groups and systems to achieve lasting positive change.
