Subject outline

This subject begins the process of building clinical competence in assessment and diagnosis of major disorders and a rich appreciation of their psychopathology including the subjective experience of clients. The DSM and ICD classification systems are critically appraised and used, and students are guided in developing skills in administering a mental status examination and diagnostic interview.

01. Demonstrate an understanding of the notion of a taxonomy of mental disorders, with particular reference to the rationale, structure, content and limitations of the DSM system

Presentations by and interviews with consumers about the subjective experience and life impact of living with major mental health disorders

04. Develop skill in conducting and appraising semi-structured diagnostic interviews that routinely consider differential diagnoses, age specific features, and common comorbidities
