Subject outline
Students analyse the forces that have shaped community health in Australia, its current scope and role, related developments in other health services, and its possible future directions. The philosophical and political underpinnings of community health in Australia are examined, particularly in relation to the changing concept of public health. The role of community health services in health promotion, illness prevention, primary care and rehabilitation are also studied. The application of community-based approaches to areas such as aged care, disability, mental health, and alcohol and drug problems is reviewed, with particular reference to community development and participation, client rights, de-institutionalisation and normalisation.
