Subject outline
This is an introductory level language subject focusing on contemporary spoken and written Japanese. Students are provided with the ability to communicate in Japanese in various situations that they may encounter in Australia and Japan. Students learn to read and write the hiragana and katakana syllabic scripts as well as 45 kanji and thus learn to read and write at an elementary level.

01. Learn to interact in Japanese. Specifically to exchange greetings, introduce oneself, speak about family and professions and one's daily life.

- Speaking in the target language in pairs and in groups in the workshops. Practicing authentic dialogues in pairs. Students are presented with authentic audio-visual material as well as listening tasks. Pair and/or self assessment activities.

02. Learn to read and write hiragana and katakana as well as 45 kanji. To learn to read and write simple sentences.
- Activities:
- Reading and writing activities not only in the reading/writing workshop but also in the grammar workshop. Reading short authentic dialogues and/or texts. Preparation of written components of group role plays. Relevant written homework activities as well.

03. Participation, which contributes to a cohesive group dynamic and facilitates learning the target language.
- Activities:
- Participate individually, in pairs and in groups, inside and outside of the classroom so as to gain ability and confidence in using Japanese. Activities include text based and authentic dialogues and tasks, peer review of PowerPoint slides and peer practice. Native speakers are invited into our workshops for more authentic practice opportunities.

04. Integration of discrete learning - the four components of language learning: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, to produce a new meaningful whole.
- Activities:
- Manage information retrieved from lecturers, texts (aural, written, and visual) and peers, and apply one's understanding in written and spoken contexts. Reflect on the process of learning as well as on one's progress, all of which facilitates the ability to complete homework and assignments in pairs or independently as required.
