Subject outline
In this subject, students will examine disorders which may be experienced by individuals over the life-span, emphasizing the basic pathological processes that underlie diseases and the risk factors and contributing causes of disorders. Specifically, general pathological processes will be discussed with emphasis on disturbed function, adaptation to injury, inflammation, tissue healing, immunological disorders, neoplasia, fluid imbalance, thrombosis, embolism and vascular disorders. In addition to general pathological processes, specific pathological conditions of body systems e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, gastrointestinal and skeletal systems along with diabetes will be addressed. Students will consolidate and apply their knowledge of pathophysiology by communicating a disease state in authentic format to scientific peers and non-expert audiences.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Demonstrate an understanding of general pathological processes of human disease and tissue healing at a cellular and biochemical level and describe and apply how these processes may impact on basic clinical outcomes in an individual.
- Activities:
- Students will undertake two online quizzes based on interactive session (lecture), online video and Workshop content. Case Study Enquiries will also be undertaken in Workshops and these Enquiries reflect what is covered in interactive sessions (lectures) and online videos; however, there will also be extra content that will not be covered in lectures or online videos. Workshops will mostly involve the use of clicker technology. Students undertake these Workshops in teams comprising 5-6 individuals.
02. Apply the general principles of human disease to diseases of selected body systems and thereby understand and describe the likely clinical course of an afflicted individual.
