Subject outline
In this subject students use critical reviews of research literature and case study research that they conduct to explore how additional language learners develop literacy skills in a new language. The experiences of children, adolescents and adults are considered. Students explore issues for and the experiences of different additional language learners, those who are already literate and those with limited or no literacy in earlier languages. The nature of literacy and language practices in languages with different writing systems is considered. The implications of the issues faced by these diverse additional language learners in learning to read and write effectively in their additional languages are used to consider how teachers can assist the development of literacy for diverse learners.
