Subject outline
This subject is designed to establish a knowledge and skill base for pre-service teachers in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, planning, assessment, evaluation and reporting for application in Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs provided to students in the senior years of secondary schooling (Years 10-12). The unit is designed to develop pre-service teachers' understanding of contemporary theory, concepts and skills in VET as applied in the school context with a particular focus on developing multiple pathways into workplaces and further education. Theoretical concepts, pedagogical principles, national Training packages and state accredited curriculum structures within VET programs are examined and applied in the design, implementation and evaluation of learning resources that are responsive to the needs of diverse learners.

01. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the general nature of vocational learning, Vocational Education and Training (VET) and competency-based training (CBT).

02. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the Australian national VET system. Including the quality systems, the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), Registered Training Organisations, Qualifications, Training packages, Units of competency, and Recognition of prior learning (RPL).

03. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how VET programs are run within secondary education and in secondary schools. Show understanding of how VET programs relate to Senior secondary certificates, such as School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs), VCE VET programs, Block Credit programs, and regimes for scored assessment.

04. Critically analyse, plan, synthesise and implement a range of vocational learning and teaching activities and sequences for senior secondary students (Years 10-12). These include a variety of pedagogical approaches and resources (including safe and ethical pedagogy, integration of literacy and numeracy and use of resources including ICT) appropriate to state and national curricula.

05. Rationalise, describe, design and evaluate a unit of work involving a variety of teaching strategies that cater for individual differences in student learning across the full range of abilities in Vocational Education and Training.
