Subject outline
In this subject, students develop an understanding of the complex contexts that surround mental health and wellbeing issues for children and adolescents in schools. An approach based on risk and resilience is explored. Case studies relating to mental health challenges for individuals are investigated. Focus areas include but are not limited to trauma, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, conduct disorders and obsessive and compulsive disorders. Focus areas are used to advance understanding of students' thoughts, beliefs, feelings about complex contexts that arise in their life experiences, and their presenting behaviours. Whole school and individualised approaches to prevention and well-being are analysed.

02. Demonstrate an understanding of the contribution schooling can and does make towards both the status and the balance of young people's mental health and well-being needs and strategies teachers can use to help students manage challenging behaviours.

03. Demonstrate understanding of prevailing mental health and well-being promotion frameworks pertinent to schools and educators.

04. Apply professional practices and strategies that can contribute to improved mental health, well-being and learning outcomes for young people, and that are inclusive of a schools' ethos and environment, curriculum provision, teaching and learning, partnerships and services, through a problem-solving response to a case study.
