Subject outline
This is a cornerstone subject in which all first year education students will develop core knowledge and skills required to learn through digital platforms. In the formation of knowledge the theories that underpin learning in the digital world will be explored. Foundational understandings of digital competencies, literacy, creativity and collaboration skills will be addressed through a variety of applications. Students will learn how to work in the digital space in a safe, ethical and responsive manner as citizens of learners in the global space. Multimodal and visual literacies will be introduced as digital platforms which support the acquisition of new knowledge. Students will establish an Digital Evidentiary Portfolio that will be a portal to document learning.

01. Demonstrate knowledge of a range of digital skills and ICT and how these can be used in accessing, processing and communicating.
- Activities:
- Students will identify, judiciously select and utilise software tools for specific purposes. Throughout the subject students will encounter key issues of importance to the 21st Century digital learner. They will thoroughly research, and thoughtfully map, a path through the present day discussions. A critical issue of digital learning will be presented as a team. To document both individual and the team progress a reflective blog will collect evidence and demonstrate the skills of being an effective team member within a productive team. 02. Examine a range of contexts that utilise digital tools and develop appropriate applications to engage within these contexts.

- Students will be exposed to a range of digital tools and contribute their existing expertise to expand the knowledge and skill-set of the cohort. This process of advantage taken from knowledge capital builds the capacity of all and exemplifies how to broaden exposure to ICT tools as a competent 21st Century Learner. (Adaptability Skills)

03. In a team research and demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning.
- Activities:
- Through the subject students will enter into the discussion of the controversial issues within the field of digital use. Via a critical and insightful review of current research the place of the ethical use of digital technologies with be highlighted. Awareness of the responsibilities when undertaking participation within digital platforms and within digital communities will be recognised and the role of the consumer in a larger picture will develop.
