Subject outline
This subject introduces you to the professional practice of dentistry/oral health with an emphasis on foundational skills and knowledge. You will be introduced to the preclinical dental simulation laboratory and will begin to develop skills and knowledge that will later be applied to preventive, periodontal and restorative procedures. The scope of dental practice, law, ethics and working safely are covered. By the end of the subject, you will be expected to have achieved basic level competency in preclinical skills including infection control, occupational health and safety, the selection and management of specific dental instruments and materials, non-surgical periodontal instrumentation techniques, and the use of rotary and hand instruments. You will acquire basic skills in interviewing dental patients and acquiring and recording patient information relevant to the oral health care process. You will also begin to appreciate the complex interplay between the social environment and the oral health of individuals and groups.
