NETWORK ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS
CSE5NEF
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject we introduce the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. We also look at OSI and TCP/IP layer models to examine the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, network, data link, and physical layers. The fundamentals of IP addressing and basic concepts of Ethernet will also be studied.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Construct, design and implement different Local Area Networks (LAN) sizes
- Activities:
- Lectures/modules on design and development of networks and devices used in design. This will also followed by practical work. The students will acquire skills need to complete test 2 and the simulated practical test
02. Configure and test state-of-the-art industry networking devices that meet network requirements and achieve optimal performance
- Activities:
- Lectures/modules are dedicated to learning about selecting and configuring various network devices functions and wiring standards used in Networks followed by practical work. These skills will prepare them for the simulated practical test
03. Design appropriate addressing schemes to solve problems across different network sizes using different approaches
- Activities:
- Lectures/tutorials on solving IPv4 addressing problems and designing appropriate addressing schemes to different network sizes. This will also followed by practical work. The students will acquire skills need to complete test 2, the practical test and the final exam
04. Analyse and compare the operation and performance of various network protocols
- Activities:
- 6 hours of lecture on 7-layer network model and standards of Network communications. Each layer, its function, and design is discussed in lectures/labs followed by practical analysis work. These concepts will help to prepare for test 1 and the final exam
05. Employ professional skills to debug and troubleshoot errors in different LAN sizes using different methodologies.
- Activities:
- 4 hours lectures/labs are dedicated to learn how professionally debug and troubleshoot errors in a network. The students will acquire skills need to complete lab practical test and the final exam
06. Generate a documentation for different computer networks by the application of well-developed knowledge and skill
- Activities:
- 2 hours lectures/labs are dedicated to learn how professionally plan and prepare network requirements and design documentation
