NETWORK ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS
CSE2NEF
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject we introduce the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. We also look at OSI and TCP/IP layer models to examine the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, network, data link, and physical layers. The fundamentals of IP addressing and basic concepts of Ethernet will also be studied.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Describe the overall OSI model and how layers interact with adjacent layers in the model.
- Activities:
- 2 hours of lecture on 7-layer network model and standards of Network communications and will acquire skills and knowledge to complete test 1 (30 mins).
02. Identify functions of each OSI layer and apply this knowledge to build a Network.
- Activities:
- Each layer, its function, and design is discussed in lecture each week followed by laboratory work. These concepts will make them prepare for test1 and Lab Practical test.
03. Describe the evolution of Local Area Network (LAN) technology with focus on Ethernet.
- Activities:
- Two lectures on design and development of networks and devices used in design. This will also followed by practical labs for 2 hours. The students will acquire skills need to complete test 2 and Lab Practical test.
04. Apply appropriate network physical standards for different network scenarios.
- Activities:
- Two lectures are dedicated to learn about various wiring standards and type of wires used in Networks followed by laboratory practice. These skills will prepare them for Lab Practical test.
05. Describe TCP/IP based network protocol suite and compare with OSI model.
- Activities:
- Two one hour lectures are dedicated to learn how TCP/IP protocol suite is different from OSI layers and how well they perform and test them using simulators. The students will acquire skills need to complete test 2 and Lab Practical test.
