Subject outline
LAN Switching and IP routingare the two key enablers of internetworking. This subject mainly focuses on how the switching technologies areimplemented in a network and how we can secure access to a network in switch levelusing port-security and enhance performance of a network by using VLANs. Other main aspect covers in this subject is IP routing. Key concepts of IP routing together with different types of routing and routing protocols are carefully analyzed to make critical decisions on which routing type or protocol is most suitable for a given scenario. Also, practical implementation of each of these key features are covered in a simulated environment.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Design and implement switched networks.
- Activities:
- Online chapters from the prescribed textbook will form the core learning. Self-paced online learning activities (i.e. quizzes, multimedia learning activities) to reinforce the learning.
02. Implement LAN switching
- Activities:
- Online chapters from the prescribed textbook will form the core learning. The online course Cisco R&S Introduction to networks will also provide students with self-paced online learning activities (i.e. quizzes, multimedia learning activities) to reinforce the learning.
03. To identify and apply appropriate dynamic routing protocols for different network scenarios.
- Activities:
- Online chapters from the prescribed textbook will form the core learning. The online course Cisco R&S Introduction to networks will also provide students with self-paced online learning activities (i.e. quizzes, multimedia learning activities) to reinforce the learning.
04. Compare and contrast routing algorithms
- Activities:
- Online chapters from the prescribed textbook as well as webinars will be used. Online simulations and similar multimedia resources will help to illustrate the concepts.
