Subject outline

This subject is an introduction to the equine industry, its structure, operations and business models. It describes the scope and components of the equine industry and identifies the attributes of a range of equine enterprises. Students will beintroduced to the safe work practices necessary when working with horses and equine equipment within the industry, especially when handling horses and managing animals. The subject develops students' knowledge to identify thehealthy horse, resources to maintain health and commonly used feed stuffs.Recognition and practice in the use of equipment used in the equine sector is undertaken in workshops. Students will develop skills in planning for normal horse husbandry undertaken by equine specialists including farriers and dentists. Working with live animals normally found on horse farms will be undertaken in this subject.

Special conditions This subject is taught at the Epping campus of Melbourne polytechnic. The student is expected to work with live animals. All use of animals is regulated through the Scientific Procedures Licence and The Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
