Subject outline
This subject introduces students to aspects of the legal system that regulate the dead, death and dying. Students will examine theories, practices and procedures of coronial law, forensic medicine, medical law and related professions in Australia. It will investigate the distinctive roles of the coroner, forensic pathologist and medical practitioner during the death investigation process to equip students with the knowledge and necessary skills to effectively participate in the inquisitorial jurisdiction. Students may also explore other areas of the legal regulation of death, such as laws regulating cemeteries and the right to burial, power of attorney, organ donation, abortion law, euthanasia and assisted suicide, and the intersection between legal, social and cultural approaches to death.
