INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY

2017
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject students are introduced to the sociology of contemporary society. We examine how and why we live the way we do in the world today, with particular attention to issues of inequality, cultural diversity, and social change. We consider the distinctiveness of a sociological way of viewing the world, and explore how its diverse theories and methods of investigation help us to better understand and respond to important issues, including the impact of larger global contexts on everyday life, and the capacity for individuals and groups to make a difference in the future. This subject addresses La Trobe's Global Citizenship Essential. Global Citizenship entails deep appreciation of how we live in an interconnected world, being able to recognize the global context of concepts, act across cultures and boundaries, and work with diverse communities - now and in the future.
