Subject outline

This unit will provide students with the ability to evaluate and interpret information gathered from measures and approaches used in psychological assessment. The unit will be comprised of three themes covering measurement theory, individual differences, and psychological assessment in applied contexts. Lectures in measurement theory will cover classical and modern psychometric approaches to the construction, implementation, and evaluation of psychological measures. Lectures in individual differences will extend on the coverage of cognitive ability, personality, and emotion offered in PSY1EFP and PSY1CFP, with a focus on assessment. Lectures in applied psychological assessment will cover the issues associated with the appraisal of behaviours, thoughts, interests and emotions across clinical, educational, organisational, and forensic contexts. This subject is a capstone subject in a psychology major.

02. Cooperate with team members in order to prepare and orally present an empirically based psychometric evaluation of an assessment tool.

Activities:
Formative: Tutorial Class Exercises Formative and Summative: Students participate in a 10 minute group classroom PowerPoint presentation of a psychometric review of an assessment tool. Group will be assessed on the group presentation (5% of total subject mark)

03. Independently develop a logical and well-supported written psychometric evaluation of an assessment tool based on empirical evidence.

Formative: Tutorial Class Exercises Formative and Summative: Students independently review a psychological assessment tool in a 500 word report Formative and Summative: The group presentation provides feedback directly applicable to the 10% individual review Summative: Exam questions

Formative: Tutorial class exercises and LMS quizzes Formative and Summative: Score and interpret hypothetical test results presented as part of a fictionalised case study (1500 words) and exam questions

05. Synthesise the information typically gathered during a clinical, educational, organisational or forensic assessment into an assessment report.

Activities:
Formative: Tutorial classroom exercises, model reports, and LMS quizzes. Summative: The 1500 word case study report will be marked on a scoring rubric which emphasises communication skills, problem-solving, quantitative literacy, and ethical awareness (35%)
