Subject outline
In this subject, students are introduced to the theory and practice of clinical assessment techniques. Principles of normal and pathological body postures and functions are addressed. There is significant focus on clinical assessment of medical conditions such as musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders affecting the limbs and spine. Practical sessions develop clinical assessment skills used within the prosthetic and orthotic clinical setting and provide experience in the applicable assessment techniques.

Plan and perform all aspects of a client assessment in a safe manner for self, client and others present

02. Integrate the results from a clinical assessment to develop an effective, client specific treatment plan
- Activities:
- a. Discuss P&O ethical and professional codes of conduct and the implications that relate to client interactions b. Collate and prioritise results from your clinical assessment in a socially responsible manner c. Determine possible P&O interventions and their likely benefits d. Determine any additional referral options and their likely benefits e. Analyse assessment results and likely treatment options and select the most appropriate client specific treatment plan

03. Perform an efficient assessment, analyse the findings and integrate these with pathology based assumptions to develop a contextualized treatment plan
- Activities:
- a. Demonstrate an ability to independently source quality reference material to inform your understanding of the physical presentation of common pathologies b. Identify areas of the body typically affected by a given pathology and describe expected physical presentations c. Conduct and justify observations and perform tests that are necessary to evaluate the extent of the affect of any given pathology

04. Communicate in a professional manner to perform and report on a client assessment
- Activities:
- a. Apply effective questioning, listening and interpersonal skills during your client interviews b. Document results from your client interaction in a medical record using the required format, media and language c. Report effectively in written or oral form on your client interactions for a variety of audiences and purposes, such as referral and client education d. Develop and present a rigorous argument that justifies your clinical assessment process, findings and/ or selected treatment plan
