Subject outline

In this unit students majoring in Politics who have nearly completed their degree are encouraged to reflect upon what they have learned about the discipline, consolidate their knowledge and skills and explore the practical application of these skills to the world beyond the university. Through a series of dynamic, action-oriented readings, lectures and seminars, students will survey, analyse and discuss different traditions, behaviours and practices in the discipline and the world of work. Topics covered include political communication (written, visual and oral), political leadership, negotiation and political activism. Students will be assessed on a variety of activities and tasks including their ability to produce a piece of written political communication, a short piece of political analysis, lead an online group discussion, deliver a short oral presentation to your peers as well as various classroom based activities. This subject addresses La Trobe's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Essential.

02. Contribute meaningfully to critical discussions and debates about the discipline of politics and the nature of political work, including the capacity to apply theory and locate and synthesise diverse knowledge resources.

Produce a major political communication project that demonstrates the innovative use of a variety of communicative and behavioural methods and skills relevant to politics, for example, written, visual and spoken communication, negotiation, persuasion and influence, time management, organisation.
