Subject outline
In this subject, students will further develop their skills in podiatric treatments, therapy, intervention techniques and patient management through clinical practice at the La Trobe University Health Sciences Clinic and external placements. They will focus on advanced foot and ankle surgery, advanced wound management and working with older people while consolidating skills acquired from previous learning. Students will build upon their understanding of evidence based practice and enquiry-based learning as they explore a number of complex clinical scenarios presenting to the podiatry clinic.

01. Synthesise complex information to be able to propose and justify plans for the management of contemporary issues affecting older clients. You should be able to: (a) describe the role of podiatrists and other health professionals that are involved in working with older people; (b) identify and discuss key contempory issues in gerontology; (c) explain the role of the podiatrist in the management of older people; (d) plan management of a contemporary issue affecting an older client.

02. Critically analyse information to justify your assessment, management and referral of older people in podiatric clinical practice. You should be able to: (a) select assessments that are specific to older people for the podiatric management of these clients; (b) explain your management of issues specific to older people; (c) write, accept and interpret referrals from other health professionals.

03. Synthesise complex information to write and justify a referral of a client for foot and ankle surgery as part of management of common, complex and traumatic foot and ankle pathologies. You should be able to: (a) describe the range and purpose of advanced foot and ankle surgical techniques; (b) explain the management principles and long-term sequelae of foot and ankle surgery; (c) explain the indications and contraindications for foot and ankle procedures; (d) explain how you would assess and manage post-operative complications; (e) select and justify the use of advanced foot and ankle techniques for a given patient.

04. Use best available research and theories to justify a referral to other health professionals for the use of advanced wound management of the foot and lower limb for a given patient. You should be able to: (a) describe the role of podiatrist and other health professionals involved in providing advanced wound management; (b) describe the range and purpose of advanced wound management techniques; (c) explain the management principles and long term sequelae of advanced wound management techniques; (d) explain the indications and contraindications for advanced wound management techniques; (e) appraise evidence for the use of advanced wound management techniques; (f) select and justify the use of an advanced wound management technique for a given patient.
