Subject outline
In this subject, you will develop knowledge and skills for analysing the formation, structure and dynamics of groups and networks, and how their attributes can be utilised to effectively promote health. An appreciation will be developed of theories and models for mobilising collective action. Various local and international health consumer groups, advocacy coalitions and networks with health improvement and equity objectives will be examined from the perspectives of how they have built capacity and brought about change. Successful models for growing and sustaining networks for health will be discussed. The concepts of health literacy, health education and empowerment will provide foundations for this subject.

- Read and analyse peer reviewed literature that examines theory concerning the emergence, operations and lifecycle of groups and networks in health promotion; make a posting on a LMS discussion site and discuss postings of other students

02. Locate and critically examine case examples of groups and networks whose objectives align with health promotion objectives
- Activities:
- Independent student-led research; compare and contrast case examples of groups and networks that promote health from a number of perspectives: their aims, origins, membership, capacity, how communication and participation are managed, how social media is utilised, the distribution of decision making power and action, and how the public is engaged; post a reflection on a LMS discussion site
