Subject outline
In this subject, students are given the opportunity to review contemporary theories of illness narratives and first-person accounts of illness experience plus aspects of caregiving in order to develop a phenomenology of offering and receiving care in chronic and life-threatening illness. Particular attention will be paid to contemporary understandings of, and approaches to, spirituality emerging from such narratives. Implications for assessing the spiritual strengths and needs of both patients and caregivers, and developing spiritual care plans, will be discussed in the context of the emerging national, international and World Health Organization spiritual care assessment literature.
