Subject outline
Pharmacists dispense many dosage forms and need to understand their strengths and limitations. Students will be taught the design and formulation of two-phase pharmaceutical products including suspensions and emulsions. Major topics include: pharmaceutically relevant physicochemical phenomena, quality assurance, preparation and extemporaneous dispensing of pharmaceutical preparations, including pharmaceutical calculations.

01. Meet the PSA Professional Practice Standard for Compounding by preparing and dispensing extemporaneous products.
- Activities:
- Activity: Tutorials, practical work. Assessment: Assessed in the in-class practical test, practical skills assessment, including exam. Students must prepare and dispense solution and two-phase formulations. Marks are awarded for labelling accuracy, elegance of product. Quality assurance protocols are used throughout, and students must be able to self-assess the quality of their products.

02. Explain and predict the properties of 2-phase systems and discuss their formulation.
- Activities:
- Activity: Lectures, tutorials, problem sheet questions, practical work. Assessment: Assessed in the written exam and practical skills assessment. Questions on these assessments contain physiochemical and formulation information that must be used to predict the behaviour of gels, suspensions, or emulsion systems. On the exam students must be able to use their knowledge of the science behind 2-phase systems to complete the problems.

03. Use knowledge of topical formulations to justify the selection of an appropriate topical product for a specified use.
- Activities:
- Activity: Lectures, tutorials, practical work. Assessment: Assessed in the in-class practical test, practical skills assessment, which includes an oral component, written exam. In these assessments students are asked to select an appropriate topical product for an application and justify this choice.

04. Accurately perform basic pharmaceutical calculations.
- Activities:
- Activity: Lectures, tutorials, on-line quiz bank. Assessment: Students should successfully complete the on-line quizzes and then sit a final test where they must achieve a score of 90% to pass the subject. The questionbank is accessible via the LMS - students can repeat quizzes as often as they like. A Question and Answer forum is set up to encourage collaborative problem-solving. There is also a dedicated tutorial for calculations and problem-solving.
