Subject outline

This subject introduces students to the pharmaceutical sciences and covers the areas of physical chemistry and laboratory skills necessary to prepare and understand the formulation of pharmaceutical products. This subject focuses on solution formulations. Students will be introduced to products and routes of administration, absorption, distribution and elimination of drugs. They will study pharmaceutically relevant physicochemical phenomena, formulation of solutions, and pharmaceutical calculations.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Apply methods of compounding by manufacturing and dispensing a solution product in accordance with the PSA Professional Practice Standard for Compounding.

Activities:
Product Labelling And Extemporaneous products: During the semester labelling and documentation for products is assessed. The labelling and documentation must meet the PSA standard, and so students are assessed on these important professional writing skills. At the end of the semester a practical test is given and students must reach the hurdle benchmark by completing the tasks in line with the PSA guidelines. Students are also assessed in the interview, where they can be asked questions on any of the practical tasks they have been given in the semester. They could be asked specifically about a product, a label, or the science of the formulation.

02. Predict and explain the properties of solutions by the calculation and interpretation of thermodynamic parameters and describe how these relate to pharmaceutical solutions.

Activities:
Assessed in the exam and during the prac interview. In addition to written calculations, students must be able to explain orally the significance of the physical chemistry to formulation and bioavailability, and also the role of ingredients in a formulation.

03. Assess the advantages and disadvantages of a wide variety of dosage forms by describing how dosage form can impact on factors such as bioavailability, stability and product handling.

Activities:
Assessed in the exam, and during the prac interview. In addition to written calculations, students must be able to explain orally the significance of the physical chemistry to formulation and bioavailability, and also the role of ingredients in a formulation.

04. Apply pharmacokinetic principles by describing ADME and how this can be affected by dosage form and route of administration.

Activities:
Assessed in the final exam and the practical interview.

05. Accurately calculate dosage by completion of calculation hurdle quizzes and test.

Activities:
There is a 50 minute calculation test. Preparation is via a series of three LMS quizzes, to sit the calculation test the students must achieve 80% in the 3rd quiz by the test date. The questions in the final test are a selection of questions from these LMS quizzes. Students are allowed to repeat the quizzes to reach the hurdle benchmark until the end of the examination period.
