SCREEN CULTURE: LAND, SEX, COLLECTIVE IDENTITIES

MSS3SCI

2017

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

In this subject students will critically consider the thematic use of landscape, sexualities and collective identities in popular film and long-form screen narratives. The literary origins of these texts will also be explored. Each of these themes will be looked at separately and as inter-related components of culturally specific storytelling with global impact. We will explore past and present screen representations (and manipulations) of the dominant identities we share and also those we later abandon, whether we consider them to be generationally adopted or culturally enduring aspects of nationhood. Workshops and assignments focus on the development of research, writing, critical thinking and discussion. Emphasis is placed on active participation and constructive analysis of prescribed screen and literary texts.
