Subject outline
In this subject, we will provide an introduction to the theory and practice of phonetics (the study of production and perception of the sounds of human languages). Theoretical background and practical analysis will be emphasised, with students practising the production as well as the analysis of sounds. We will also cover both segmental and prosodic aspects of speech, and special emphasis will be on the analysis of sound patterns within and across languages. In addition the course offers a basic understanding of speech acoustics and spectrogram reading.
