Subject outline
This subject combines the study of Cuban history with summer-semester travel to Cuba. Students in this subject examine the origins of: the revolutionary war for independence from Spain (1895-1898); the abortive political revolution of 1933; and the Cuban Revolution 1959-2017. As we explore Havana and Cuba, students examine nine key themes and eras in Cuban history: the 1895-1898 Independence War and the beginnings of US military; political and economic intervention; the abortive 1933 revolution; the urban and guerrilla war against the Batista regime (1952-1959); Fidel Castro and Che Guevara; women and the Cuban Revolution; land reform and literacy campaigns; film and revolution; US responses to the Revolution; the impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union; and the normalization of Cuban-U.S relations (2014-present).
