Subject outline

War has played a crucial role in Australian history. This subject will explore the centrality of war in ideas about Australian nationhood, memory and mythmaking. We will ask questions about the relationships between memory, race, war and nationalism. These will be discussed with reference to the two world wars, the Vietnam war, the Gulf wars and recent Peacekeeping forces. The subject will draw on films, literature, memoirs, letters and diaries. It will use the insights provided through cultural, social and feminist history.
