Subject outline
In this subject students are provided with practical and theoretical groundings in the knowledge and skills required to begin their teaching careers as professionals with a clear sense of the broad purpose and responsibilities of a teacher. We focus on student skill development to establish themselves as competent, capable, critical, thinking members of the teaching profession and on the transition from being a student teacher to being a graduate teacher. The subject is organised around themes of essential professional knowledge embodied in the current professional standards for teachers. Topics examined include schools as institutional work sites, performance management, industrial environment, public sector and legislative requirements, employment conditions, career planning, mentoring, induction and the development of supportive networks. The subject will enable students to make links between theoretical contexts and practical applications.
