Subject outline

This unit is designed to establish a knowledge and skill base for pre-service teachers in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, planning, assessment and reporting for English as an additional language for years 7-10 or for beginning learners in adult education contexts. The unit is designed to develop pre-service teachers# understanding of contemporary theory, concepts and skills related to lower secondary students beginning or in the early stages of the formal learning of English, including bridging institutional transitions (e.g. primary to secondary school; language centre to mainstream school) in ways that also address cross-curriculum priorities. Theoretical concepts, pedagogical principles as well as State and National curriculum structures related to English as an additional language and developing plurilingualism are examined and applied in the evaluation, design and implementation of learning resources that are responsive to the needs of diverse learners, including students with refugee and disrupted educational experiences.
