Subject outline
Academic Skills for Tertiary Study is a subject designed to help students with the transition to university. Students learn about the structure and language needed to be successful in written work and tutorial presentations. This unit also models ways to improve essential skills such as critical thinking and analytical writing. Using a combination of face to face and on-line learning technology, the subject guides students through: the note-taking/making process (how to get the most from prescribed readingsand lectures); academic conventions in writing (how to consider audience and tone) and referencing (how to comply with academic integrity standards); the assignment writing process (how to plan and write cohesively structured assignments thataddress the topic);oral presentations (how to deliver a formal speech) and exam preparation. Learning is supported in an academically stimulating and supportive environment.
