2017
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
This subject introduces students to the strategic differences between academic communication and other forms of communication. Students examine the conventions of academic culture and the purposes of academic communication. Students are introduced to different academic writing genres and the conventions fundamental to academic communication within and across disciplines. They also consider the ways that accepted academic forms work to influence received knowledge and how information is constructed to meet the needs of a given audience. Students critically analyse a range of views on academic culture and academic communication modes. The students develop skills in critical reading, research, writing, editing and presentation. Assessments include an annotated bibliography, a personal statement to accompany a CV, a research essay and an oral presentation.
