Subject outline
CIV4INB is a capstone subject which extends the work carried out in CIV4INA; requiring students (working in pairs) to continue in-depth investigation of a research topic that illustrates applications of themes already dealt with in their course. By the end of this subject, students specifically gain experience in critical thinking and analysis of a particular topic, working as part of a team, organisational skills and verbal and written skills. Assessment elements for this subject include a formal thesis, an oral presentation and poster. Students are also given an individual mark by the supervisor for their efforts in the project.

01. Investigate to professional standards, technical engineering problems.
- Activities:
- Students from each team research their chosen project topic under the guidance of their supervisor. Every project is different. However, all projects require teams to apply skills they have learnt from different aspects of their studies to solving the problem they have chosen to work on.

02. Apply good organisational skills to achieve steady progress during the project.
- Activities:
- Each student must manage their time effectively to succeed in this subject. Supervisors give general direction at weekly meetings. However, it is up to the teams to organise their day to day activities to make progress. Students from each team are expected to keep a log book for recording their day to day activities.

03. Write a formal investigation thesis report and poster using appropriate technical language which focuses on explaining and justifying the project design choices, outcomes and results with reference to relevant literature.

- The extent of a student's knowledge of the field is assessed through the student's thesis, oral and poster presentations.

04. Present results of a technical project orally and by poster using appropriate technical language and answer technical questions in the context of their chosen project.
- Activities:
- All students from each team give an oral presentation to their peers and a group of supervising staff which describes the background to the project, the methodology used and a summary of the key findings and outcomes.

Independent Research
Five 1.0 hours independent research per week and delivered via face-to-face.
"This subject is similar to an honours subject in a science degree. The 5 hours/week requirement is a nominal specification for the subject. Students work independently on their project, and maintain regular contact with their supervisors."
