Subject outline
This is an introductory subject designed for students with no background in Mandarin. In this subject we aim to provide integrated training in speaking, listening, reading and writing through interactive classroom activities and home assignments. The topics covered include introduction, greetings, family, dates and time, hobbies, and visiting friends. The subject also comprises foundation work on the Romanised phonetics system, pinyin, and the Chinese writing system. Students should attain a basic level of competence in oral and written Chinese and a working knowledge of approximately 160-200 characters by the end of the subject. It is recommended that student take AST1IJI and AST1ICI with this subject.
