BIO5THC
2017
Credit points: 30
Subject outline
This subject forms the third of 4 thesis subjects which are usually run as a group over two semesters. In this particular subject students will focus on their laboratory research, and in particular the generation, presentation, analysis and interpretation of the data this research generates. By this stage, the students are expected to perform as semi-independent researchers. Each student will prepare and present their research progress to date to the Department in the form of a poster.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Identify, read and understand scientific literature relevant to the research project
- Activities:
- Students are expected to continue accumulating knowledge about their research project and the fundamental biological and biochemical principles behind it throughout their research year.
02. Carry out semi-independent laboratory experiments as the core phase of the research project
- Activities:
- Laboratory-based research of around 25-30 hours/week divided between subjects BIO5THC and BIO5THD.
03. Accumulate, critically analyse and consolidate experimental data.
- Activities:
- Data analysis from laboratory-based research activities.
04. Experimental design
- Activities:
- This is the core stage of the SMBB research year, in which students should be analysing accumulated data, with a view to designing the most effective experiments to contribute to the thesis submitted in BIO5THD.
05. Presentation of research data and its interpretation
- Activities:
- The students will present a research poster to the Department as part of this subject. The mark for this project will contribute 5% to the total mark for the subject BIO5THD
06. Appreciate and digest scientific information in the form of seminar presentations by leading researchers in their fields.
- Activities:
- Attend weekly departmental research seminars presented by research leaders from scientific institutes from outside the La Trobe.
07. Report research progress and analyses of experimental results in an oral format.
- Activities:
- Laboratory meetings or timetabled weekly workshops with the student's supervisor or mentor. These meetings may take place individually or in a group setting.
