Subject outline
This subject will introduce detailed knowledge of animal nutrition related to the feeding of aquaculture animals for economically optimal growth in intensive aquaculture systems. A focus on nutrition will provide students with knowledge and skills relevant to the management of aquaculture animals for economically optimal growth in intensive aquaculture systems. Practical aspects of the subject will focus on the formulation of diets suitable in form and nutritional composition for aquatic animals. Students will develop practical skills at the NMIT Aquaculture Training and Research Centre, where students will have the opportunity to undertake feeding experiments and trials using prepared feeds. Aquacultural principles that will be covered include feed formulation, growth, feeding behaviour, automatic feeders, feeding frequency, experimental methods, pellet size, pellet form and evaluation of diet performance through experimentation.

04. Conduct experiments to evaluate performance of diet nutrient profiles of particular species in relation to the economics of feeding and environmental sustainability

- Workshop sessions, case studies and practical exercises using the aquaculture facilities will be used to apply feed principles. Students will have the opportunity to test feeding theories and plans. An oral presentation to the class will form the basis of discussions.
