Journalism Research teaches students to research and write news and feature stories in the most detailed, accurate, engaging and creative way possible. Students are guided through online and offline research strategies and are required to think critically about every source they use. Students are required to report on a meeting or event and to initiate and develop an original feature story idea for print or online platforms.

Activities:
Students must expand and follow up one "news in brief" story from a metro daily. Students are required to work critically with a range of online sources.

02. Ability to report on news events and to write short, accurate news stories for target print or online publications

Activities:
Students attend either a meeting or event to be agreed with their tutor, take notes, interview speakers and write a news story. Pre-meeting research includes reading agendas, minutes and specialist reports.

Website and interview critiques for news stories, reflective statement in feature assignment, in-class research and writing exercises

05. Understanding of a range of journalistic genres, including inverted pyramid news stories, colour writing, first-person essays, gonzo reportage and the many versions of investigative feature writing

Two news stories, feature assignment and bi-weekly in-class writing, reporting, pitching and interviewing exercises
