Subject outline

This subject introduces students to the strategic differences between academic communication and other forms of communication. Students examine the purpose of academic communication and the conventions of academic culture. Students are introduced to different academic writing genres and the conventions fundamental to academic communication within and across disciplines. They also consider the ways that accepted academic forms work to influence received knowledge and how information is constructed to meet the needs of a given audience. Students deconstruct and critically analyse a range of views on academic culture and academic communication modes. The students develop the academic skills of note-taking, written communication, online research and oral presentation. They must conduct an interview with a discipline academic and give a presentation on their own research interest. Assessments include a report, a professional email, a critical review and a research essay.
