Subject outline
This subject will focus on the ways in which Hindi is used in Bollywood films and in TV broadcasting across a wide range of contexts typical of contemporary Hindi media. Drawing on film and broadcast sources as well as secondary print literature students will explore the ways in which Hindi media engages with the interaction between traditional Indian cultural values and contemporary international influences. Language areas addressed will include the development of the skills needed for reading, writing and translation of different genres of media Hindi and the development of relevant conversation skills. Teaching will be in a 3 hour workshop format which will include lectures on Hindi in Indian media, discussion of the distinctive features of Hindi use in media, creative activities and group work. Assessment will include activities related to language skills and the preparation of a report, in Hindi, on a selected area in Hindi media.
