Subject outline
This subject will focus on major changes in the international economy in the period since 1900, in particular, the ideological clash between governments and free markets for control over the economy. Topics include: (i) Economic impact of two World Wars and post war reconstruction; (ii) Great Depression and Keynesian macroeconomics; (iii) Russian Revolution, Stalinist industrialisation and collapse of the USSR; (iv) Long post war boom and stagflation; (v) Rise and fall of Japan; emergence of China; Asian Financial Crisis; (vi) Global Finance Crisis. This subject has a strong focus on qualitative aspects of Economics and requires advanced reading, writing and analytical skills.
