Student experience
Our students come from diverse places and bring with them different life experiences. They add to the richness of our School and make a valuable contribution to our learning environments.
Find out how we set our students up for success.
At La Trobe University, we have a longstanding commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice; our students are amongst the most diverse of all Australian universities, and we are committed to providing a learning environment and workplace where all students and staff feel valued, respected and supported to achieve their full potential.
We care about building a connected community that actively champions diversity and inclusion to help people thrive. We achieve this by supporting our people, valuing diverse thinking as a key driver of innovation, and holding ourselves to account in delivering a culture where equity is a way of life.
La Trobe is committed to promoting equal opportunities and support for all students and staff, with a focus on six key pillars: cultural, disability, gender equality, Indigenous, LGBTIQA and life stages.

We want our students to have an excellent experience with us and hope they return as they progress through their professional careers.
We regularly meet with our student representatives, ensuring we are receptive to what is happening with our students and enhancing their experience with us.
Because we don’t have large class sizes, students have ready access to staff and our world-class teaching facilities.
Nursing and midwifery students can also engage socially with other students across the University through a vast range of student associations.
Extensive support services also exist for students at the Bundoora campus to optimise success and the overall student experience. Find out more.
Our students undertake placements in a range of settings, ensuring they have the experience they need to safely and confidently practise as nurses and/or midwives when they graduate.
These placements recognise that nurses and midwives practise in many different settings.
Clinical placements: These primarily occur in a range of the School’s partner hospitals which supports the transition to the workforce by prolonged interaction with the health services, familiarity with people, processes, systems and environments, as well as being able to present knowledge and skills to future potential employers.
Community-based placements: These take place in a wide range of areas including aged care, general practice, community health, mental health and outpatient settings.
International placements: Many students choose to undertake an overseas clinical placement with one of our international partners.
The School of Nursing and Midwifery is globally connected with partners in many international countries.
Staff and students are encouraged to take a global world view of health and wellbeing and associated issues.
Our international partnerships and opportunities add to the richness of our education programs, as well as staff and student experiences. Many of our staff work with researchers in Asia, North America and Europe on projects of mutual interest.
Our students have opportunities to undertake short overseas placements during their courses, adding to their learning and personal development. Find out more.
Our ‘Internationalisation at Home’ program provides an online mobility experience with nursing and midwifery students from other countries, including Sweden and Hong Kong, to build their cultural and global awareness.
