Professor Robert Pike, Provost of the College of Science, Health and Engineering, said the new ranking positively reflects La Trobe’s excellence in Psychology.
“We welcome this new ranking as an endorsement of the standard of our research and our contribution to teaching Australia’s next generation of psychologists,” Professor Pike said.
Professor Stephen Kent, Head of the School of Psychology and Public Health, said the School is home to the Department of Psychology and Counselling, the Department of Public Health, and the respected Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre, Bouverie Centre, Centre for Alcohol Policy Research, Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, and the Centre for Health Communication and Participation.
“All these areas specialise in providing critical data to support evidence-based work in the health sector,” Professor Kent said.
“We are extremely proud of our internationally respected and highly cited research across the breadth of psychology including clinical and health, behavioural neuroscience, neuropsychology, and social and developmental psychology."
Professor Kent said the increase in ranking confirms a recent assessment by Excellence in Research for Australia that the School’s research in psychology was well above world standard.
“In addition, we deliver high quality programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, including a new professional training program based in regional Victoria. We have strong, ongoing collaborations with industry, and are international in our approach,” Professor Kent said.
The Times Higher Education World Rankings by Subject also placed La Trobe’s Life Sciences at 220 in the world, up four places, and Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health at 205, up 38 from last year.
Other Times Higher Education World Rankings by Subject announced recently include Arts and Humanities at 183 and Education at 104.
The University is ranked in the top 400 universities worldwide by all major independent rankings agencies – 291st in the Times Higher Education World Rankings (the University’s highest position this decade), 307th in the ARWU global rankings and joint 400th in the QS World University Rankings.
