Finding purpose through social work

When Chrissy began her social work degree at La Trobe University, she expected to learn about helping others. What she didn't anticipate was the profound journey of self-discovery that awaited her.

“In studying social work, I have been surprised as to how introspective the course has forced me to be throughout my learning. I have been encouraged in examining my own personal beliefs, assumptions, and values and how they influence my identity and the way I conduct myself in my everyday life.”

Currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) at La Trobe University in Mildura, Chrissy's journey to finding her academic calling wasn't immediately straightforward. After completing high school in Mildura, she initially moved to Melbourne to study psychology. However, like many regional students, the transition to big city life proved challenging.

"I struggled to adjust to the unfamiliarity of Melbourne," she reflects. After deferring her studies and returning home, she discovered social work as her true calling. "I started studying a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) and never looked back."

The decision to study at La Trobe's Mildura campus has proved invaluable for Chrissy, allowing her to maintain strong connections with her community while pursuing her academic goals.

"Being able to study locally has been very convenient for me as it allows me to access uni while also being able to remain in closer proximity to my family and friends, and wider social supports and connections."

Currently completing her placement with the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing Mallee's Community Partnership Team, Chrissy is gaining practical experience that's helping shape her future career aspirations. While still exploring various career paths, she's particularly drawn to working with young people and those affected by mental health conditions.

"I've always known that I want to work in the context of supporting children and young people, and people suffering from mental health conditions," she says, noting her interest in roles such as school wellbeing officer or working in Child Protection.

Beyond her studies, Chrissy maintains an active presence in her community. She works as a La Trobe University Student Ambassador, working at uni and school events sharing more about university life, and stays involved in local sports, playing both social and competitive netball with the Cardross Football and Netball Club.

For high school students contemplating their future paths, Chrissy offers reassuring advice: "It is okay if you are still undecided or feel unclear about what pathway you want to explore once you graduate as you will eventually discover the right path for yourself."
