Darebin City Council x La Trobe drive community development through student placements

Darebin City Council prioritises the professional development of its workforce and offers a range of La Trobe placement opportunities to students that in turn upskill staff and help drive important organisational projects forward.

La Trobe University's student industry placement program creates a mutually beneficial partnership between industry and academia that serves three key purposes: enriching student education, contributing to the success of host companies, and driving community development.

“La Trobe University’s strong academic foundation and emphasis on practical experience ensure that students are well-prepared to contribute effectively to our initiatives. By involving these students in our projects, we not only benefit from their knowledge and skills but also foster a collaborative environment that aligns with our organisational values,” says Subin Shrestha, Asset Engineer, Darebin City Council.

Industry placements support the council’s initiatives by introducing a talent pipeline and integrating new perspectives and innovative ideas into community planning and service delivery.

“During a student’s placement, we can observe real-world performance, work ethic, and attitude, and gain valuable insights into practical skills and cultural fit. Their ability to integrate with our team, adapt, and learn quickly helps us determine their growth potential,” says Subin.

Darebin City Council prioritises the professional development of its workforce and offers a range of placement opportunities to students that in turn upskill staff and help drive important organisational projects forward.

“The main driver for us to take on students from La Trobe is to provide them valuable opportunities to engage in real engineering projects, and gain hands-on experience,” says Subin.

During her placement, Kavindi Sandupama Jayaweera, a Master in Engineering (Civil) student, was able to blend her academic knowledge with practical applications in water management, transport infrastructure, and asset maintenance.

“The placement intricately linked the theoretical teachings of my civil engineering master's program with real-world applications across crucial disciplines,” says Kavindi.

“The experience was not just relevant but essential to my professional growth as a civil engineer. It not only validated the knowledge acquired during my studies but also instilled a deeper appreciation for the role of engineering in enhancing community infrastructure and quality of life.”

Under Subin's guidance, along with co-supervisor Pradip Thapa and support from fellow council members, Kavindi deepened her understanding of hydraulic principles and data management in urban planning, illustrating how collaborating with diverse teams fosters effective communication and ethical decision-making.

“Kavindi brought in fresh perspectives and enhanced our problem-solving and processes.

“She introduced the latest engineering concepts, and her technical skills and proactive attitude increased our productivity and efficiency,” says Subin.

“Engaging with stakeholders and community members expanded my network, offering insights into public engagement and the broader impact of engineering projects,” Kavindi reflects, highlighting the long-term benefits that such placements create for both students and organisations.
