After working as a dental assistant for over three years, Alison Hammond was ready to progress her career. She chose to undertake La Trobe’s Bachelor of Oral Health Science to combine her passion for oral health and helping people.

“I have a keen interest in dentistry, good oral hygiene and helping others, so I decided to pursue a career as an Oral Health Therapist,” she says.

Alison recently completed a First Nations Internship Opportunity with Medibank, an experience she says was extremely rewarding.

“Completing an internship with Medibank provided me with so many opportunities that I couldn’t have imagined when I applied for the role,” she says. “I gained experience in a professional environment, as well as a lot of confidence. It also connected me with so many people who provided me with skills I will take into my future roles.”

“The opportunity to participate in so many practical sessions, and real-life placement experiences throughout my course so far has been incredibly valuable to my confidence as a future Oral Health Therapist.”

Alison says she chose La Trobe’s Bendigo campus because she liked the small-town feel and close-knit community.

“I am from a rural town, so I immediately felt at home at the Bendigo campus. I appreciate the small class sizes and getting a personalised experience with my educators. Studying at the Bendigo campus has also allowed me to build strong friendships with my peers and future colleagues,” she says.

“After I graduate, I would like to continue working in rural and regional communities to promote the significance of oral health,” she says.

“I am attracted to working in public oral health as I am passionate about making dental treatments more accessible to lower socioeconomic groups. I find great satisfaction in helping those who may not be able to access oral healthcare elsewhere.”
