La Trobe students immerse themselves in Mildura Writers Festival

Students aiming for a professional writing career will have the opportunity to practice their skills in a real-life setting, while boosting their curriculum vitae, as part of this weekend’s Mildura Writers Festival.

Students in La Trobe University’s ‘Writers in Action’ subject will engage with the festival as writers, critics, journalists, publicists, researchers and bloggers – all while completing an accredited university subject.  La Trobe University sponsors the Mildura Writers Festival and this year the subject has 14 students participating.

Students taking part are from a wide variety of degrees including Arts, Teaching, Business, Creative Arts, Media Communications and Science.  10 local students are taking part and 4 students from La Trobe’s Melbourne campus are travelling to Mildura to experience the festival.

Dr Deb Neal, Head of Campus, says the immersive subject is a unique way to create an engaging experience for students.

“At La Trobe, student experience is at the heart of everything we do.  The Writers in Action subject is an innovative way that we can offer our students a real world learning experience during their studies.  It’s fantastic we can partner with a world class literary festival in our own backyard to deliver this subject.  This subject is a wonderful demonstration of the University commiting to - One University, many communities," says Dr Neal.

“Written communication skills are crucial for any career and it’s clear our students know this, judging by the different course areas the Writers in Action students are from,” says Dr Neal.
