Welcome to Culture: Learn about Indigenous culture

“’I’m going on Country’, those four words tell a big story”

La Trobe is committed to teaching, learning and research within the area of Indigenous Australian studies. In the spirit of our commitment, we are proud to share our video, Welcome to Culture.

Filmed and edited over 10 months, Welcome to Culture is an introduction to the Indigenous cultures of the Traditional Lands on which our many campuses are located. The short film features in-depth interviews with Aboriginal Elders and representatives discussing the importance of Country, cultural traditions and history.

Co-creators Jake Sanders and Sherrin Collocott embraced the opportunity to showcase the vast diversity and beauty of Traditional Lands on which our campuses reside. Importantly, they captured a range of voices. “We interviewed people of different age groups: Elders’ voices through decades of experiences, as well as younger voices,” said Sanders.

“It was a really beautiful project to work on. I enjoyed hearing people talk about their Country and seeing that spark: the connection is so strong.”

We invite you to share in the stories told by Aboriginal people and learn about the rich history and resilience of the oldest living culture in the world.
