Let’s be real—uni life isn’t just about sitting in lectures and cramming for exams. It’s about making the most of every opportunity, both inside and outside the classroom. Trust me, volunteering has been a total game changer for me at La Trobe! As an IT undergraduate juggling multiple roles, I’ve discovered that the real magic happens outside the classroom. Each role has offered me unique experiences that challenged me and helped me grow.
Take Dogs for Life, for example. Sure, I help dogs learn commands and get comfortable with people, but guess what? The real lesson is in the patience, empathy, and teamwork I’ve picked up along the way. Who knew hanging out with dogs could teach you life skills you’d never find in a textbook?
Through my volunteering experiences, I’ve learnt invaluable skills that go beyond academic knowledge such as:
- Leadership skills: Taking initiative and leading projects has boosted my confidence and ability to motivate others
- Empathy and patience: Working with dogs and diverse groups has taught me the importance of understanding different perspectives and being patient in challenging situations
- Teamwork and collaboration: Collaborating with peers has improved my ability to work effectively in teams, fostering a spirit of cooperation and shared goals
- Community building: I’ve learned how to create a welcoming environment for new students, helping them feel connected and supported during their transition
- Adaptability: Balancing multiple responsibilities has made me more flexible and better equipped to handle unexpected challenges.
Volunteering connects you with your community and gives you a break from the academic grind. So, what’s stopping you? Have you found your way to give back yet?
