LGBTIQA+ at La Trobe

We have a vibrant LGBTIQA+ community and celebrate and support our staff and students.

Whether you are brand new to La Trobe or have been around for awhile, check out these ideas for how to connect with the LGBTIQA+ community at La Trobe. 

1. Join our group program – Finding Pride 

Finding Pride is a group program open to all our LGBTIQA+ students, offering resilience-building skills and peer connection to support wellbeing. They run once per semester, with students attending seven 1.5-hour sessions over eight weeks. Available at the Bundoora campus (Semester 1) or online (Semester 2).

2. Join a Student Club or Society

La Trobe has a range of inclusive student clubs and societies, catering for a range of interests including gaming, theatre, anime, religion and politics. Many are popular with LGBTIQA+ students. We also have specific LGBTIQA+ clubs, like the La Trobe Queer Club at the Bundoora campus.

If you don’t find something you like, you can always start a club of your own!

3. Get involved in La Trobe Sport

La Trobe Sport is dedicated to celebrating our inclusive and diverse community, where everyone feels like they belong. They endorse and uphold gender-affirming practices to encourage and facilitate intersex, trans, and non-binary participation in sport and active recreation. 4. Attend a training or workshop

La Trobe’s Prevention & Inclusion team run training and workshops to help staff and students understand lived experiences of LGBTIQA+ people and create more inclusive communities.

All staff and students can complete our Respectful Behaviour and Culture Module on LMS, it is mandatory for all new students. You can also attend our specific LGBTIQA+ Ally training, run multiple times throughout the year.

5. Attend La Trobe Pride Week

Every year in August, the La Trobe community comes together across our campuses to celebrate our very own Pride Week.

From stalls, entertainment, webinars and more, Pride Week is an opportunity connect, celebrate and support LGBTIQA+ students and staff at La Trobe.  

Pride Week in 2025 will be held from 25 – 29 August.

agreed ‘Pride Month’ in Australia. Our cities hold LGBTIQA+ pride events throughout the year, including Melbourne’s Midsumma in January, Hobart’s TasPride in February, Syndey Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in March, Brisbane Pride in September, and Adelaide Pride March in November.

La Trobe schedules Pride Week to coincide with Wear It Purple day, which is held annually in the last week of August. 

6. Explore gender, sexuality and diversity studies

La Trobe is the proud home of Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) which conducts world-class research and projects related to sex, sexuality, gender, health, human relationships and society. Take a moment to browse their work and explore study options and scholarships with this renowned research centre.

7. Book an appointment with an LGBTIQA+ Counsellor

If you’re looking for support, we have dedicated LGBTIQA+ Counsellors who have specialist experience in supporting LGBTIQA+ students. You can talk to our LGBTIQA+ Counsellors about a range of issues that may impact your study or personal life.

Initiatives at La Trobe

Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society

We are proud to be home to the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) which conducts world-class research and education on the social dimensions of sexuality, gender, health and human relationships.

ARCSHS is also home to Rainbow Health Australia, a program that supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTQIA+) health and wellbeing through research and knowledge translation, training, resources, policy advice and service accreditation through the Rainbow Tick.

Trans and Gender-Diverse Voice Services

The Trans and Gender Diverse (TAGD) Voice Clinic, situated at La Trobe, provides an individualised program of voice and communication training for people wishing to explore the different ways they can use their voice and communication to express their gender.
